Meet Valerie! She is from Columbus, Ohio and is a Social Work Major. Valerie is hopefully going to be attending a Master of Social Work program after graduation back in Ohio. Her dream job would be to work in behavioral health with children. In 5 years, Valerie sees herself having obtained her clinical licensure, to be a clinical therapist with a focus in play therapy.
Valerie believes that Phi Mu has helped her in many ways. She spent her years at UK being three hours away from family and this chapter truly helped her find a group of girls that she could spend time with and get to know. She was given the chance to make lifelong friends. Phi Mu also gave Valerie the opportunity to become a leader and become more confident in herself. Being a leader didn't only help her in her personal life but it also prepared her for future leadership positions that she may hold in her career.
Valerie shared her favorite memory from being in Rho Iota, and said, "one of my favorite memories was my sophomore year at the Phi Retreat for the new pledge class. I was one of the Phi Helpers, and a potential big. We played games and then we had a speed dating round for the potential Bigs, during this is when I found my Little, I was talking to a big group of girls that I had meet most of and so I said "since we are speed dating what's your perfect first date?" that's when Madison's large personality came out. We all slept over at the house and we had a great time!"
Valerie also offered one piece of advice for incoming freshman, "make sure that you step outside of your comfort zone to meet new people and do things that you are unsure about. Take the leap because you may end up finding things you are extremely passionate about!"
Thank you for sharing your memories and advice, Valerie! your time in Rho Iota was spent well! We will miss you!!
